Obama’s billion dollar boost

The security of Europe is sacrosanct says US president Obama and to prove the point he has committed an extra 1 billion dollars to boost the US military presence in Europe. Obama has a lot of people to reassure on his current trip to Europe but will $1 billion be enough?

Juncker: The man who would be president

The debate about who is to become the next president of the European Commission continues to bedevil the powers that be in Brussels. Ordinary voters can be forgiven for being confused or even angry that what seemed very clear before the elections has now become very unclear. Euro-skeptics and the far Right must be rubbing their hands in glee and the real losers in all this may well turn out to be those much-vaunted ideals of more European democracy, transparency and Bürgernähe.

25 years Tiananmen: Lest we Forget

The Chinese authorities seem to have done a pretty good job of removing any trace of the Tainanmen Square massacre. In recent weeks several dissidents and activists have been arrested and TV screens in China go blank when foreign news channels report on the events that occurred on this day 25 years ago.
