Could the answer to our problems be so easy to answer? It seemed to work for Reykjavik.

It all started as a joke.

Or, rather a concept for a comedy sketch. In 2008 John Gnorr, an Icelandic television comedian (and ex-punk) came up with the figure of a slimy politician who promised everything. And then the financial system crashed and the sketch crashed with it.

But the basic idea didn't die. It eventually went on to become a YouTube sketch, eventually morphing into a joke political party and ending in a full blown movement that not only won elections, but actually helped turn things around for Reykjavik and Iceland.
