Today's Webtip: Does Torture (still) matter?
Remember when the U.S. tortured?
Remember when foreign media helped whitewash the situation by referring to that torture with the U.S. compliant term "enhanced interrogation techniques"?
Remember when then President Obama ended the official torture program but refused to punish any high-ranking individuals responsible for that program?
Remember when the U.S. government released the results of their 6000 page torture report? Of course not. We are still hoping for that one. In the mean time it mightbe worth taking a look at other peoples works examining the current state of torture in the U.S.
Does Torture Really is a piece by Rebecca Gordon at the Oxford University Press. Gordon authored a book titled Mainstreaming Torture about how torture became accepted and normalized in the U.S. and provides a quick overview of that subject in her blogpost.
For those of you wondering about the current state of criminal prosecutions around the whole torture program are concerned, Mother Jones has the answer.
Apparently some sins are more forgivable than others, with whistle blowing being much worse than waterboarding.
