Today's Webtip: GoogolPlex
I used to play a game as a child called Pickle in the Middle. Some people called it Keep Away or Monkey in the Middle, but since I like motorcycles and Arlo Guthrie I prefer to stick with Pickle in the Middle.
The game involves two people throwing a ball back and forth while a third stands between them and tries to get the ball away from them.
It used to be a fun way to pass some time, but now it's more useful to explain some security concepts. Like man in the middle attacks. That thing the NSA has apparently been using to get access to info. It's also something GoogolPlex uses to give Siri more things to do.
GoogolPlex is a Siri hack that adds features to Siri without a jailbreak. It does that by spoofing DNS and pretending to be Google (just like the NSA) and then taking the information being passed between your phone and google and doing something else with it.
They eplain it themselves here. Unlike the NSA hacks, you actually get some advantage from the whole thing. Siri will do things like turn off your lights or start your car.
It sounds sort of neat, but part of me wonders if it's not just another example of hacking through social engineering.
