Today's Webtip: Surveillance State
The idea of an all knowing state using its power to control citizens is no longer relegated to the realm of fiction and tin-foil hat types. It is very much a part of the here and now.
The director of national intelligence for the U.S. has finally admitted to the use of warrentless surveillance in the States, something which has been vehemently denied in the past. And something many people have suspected for ages.
As bad as that is (and it's really bad) it still isn't the total information awareness they want. Or are capable of.
There is at least one country on the planet that has gone there, though. Ethiopia. Thanks to state owned communication monopolies and western commercial solutions (provided by the thoughtful Europeans at The Hacking Team and the Gamma Group) Ehtiopia has been succesful in convincing its populace that self-censorship is a Very Good Idea.
