Today's Webtip: Reality bites
One of the first attempts at the mainstreamification of net television just ended in tears.
Game_Jam was an attempt at turning an indie game developer marathon into a reality tv format. It was apparently the first major production by Maker Studios after their takeover by Disney. In other words, major money was involved.
Apparently not enough money to convince princpled participants to sell themselves short. The drama that resulted wasn't the kind the producers had hoped for, though, and the result was some intriguing reality reporting instead of dramatized advertising.
Rather than rise to sexist baiting instigated by a media consultant, the participants stuck together and basically walked off the set. The story has managed to get out despite draconian contracts, and it's well worth reading for anyone who wants a peek behind the scenes of staged reality.
