Today's Webtip: The Boys in the Bunkhouse
The U.S. likes to privatise things. There aint no problem a government could deal with that the market can't do better.
Education? Siphon those taxes into private schools.
Justice? Why spend money on criminals when you could be putting them to work.
Security? Booze Hamilton and Haliburton FTW!
Social net? Churches need to earn their tax exempt status and some pioneering capitalist is sure to find a way to earn a buck off the needy.
Especially if that clever guy can get away with paying them less than minimum wage, charge them for their care and housing, and charge big bucks for their labor.
That is more or less what happened to a group of learning disabled men from Texas. What started out as a feel good solution to a bad situation evolved over the years into a very bad situation indeed. A situation that was changed thanks to the works of an investigative journalist and some government workers.
You can read about it at a mixed media reportage from Dan Barry of the New York Times.
