Who controls Crimea?

Reality Check: Where imperial powers fight their battles.

Cimmerians, Greeks, Scythians, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Khazars, the Rus, Byzantine Greeks, Kipchaks, Ottoman Turks, Golden Horde Tatars and the Mongols all controlled Crimea in its early history. Even Venetian and Genovese merchants ruled the place during the 13th Century. Russia's claim to the penisula stems from the 18th century, followed by the Soviet Union for most of the 20th century before Ukraine became an independent country. Which brings us up to today.

Armed men have blockaded airports as well as a public building in the mostly Russian-speaking Crimean province, which also hosts a base of the Russian Navy. Our correspondent Tom Barton travelled down to Crimea and stood outside the occupied mayor's office in the regional capital Simferopol. So we caught up with Tom and asked him what was going on there?

Myanmar's Rohingya
Myanmar is a country that has been opening up. Ang San Su Kyi is free, she is currently a parliamentarian. President Thein Sein was last year welcomed to the White House and sanctions have been lifted. But a kind of apartheid still exists in this country that the west often ignores. It's to do with the Rohingya in the state of Rakhine, the western coastal region of Myanmar. Today we hear that the Myanmar government has suspended the operations of MSF, the government appears to be accusing MSF of bias in favour of the Muslim Rohingya minority. It comes in the same week that a human rights organization Fortify Rights has said it has seen direct evidence of government discrimination against the Rohingya. Mark Farmaner from the NGO The Burma Campaign gave us his reaction to these reports.
