Despite campaigning to preserve the immigration laws, just over 50% voted for tougher quotas.

Swiss referendum on immigrants

The Swiss have voted to reinstitute laws restricting immigration, but many analysts are saying this contravenes Switzerland's deal with the EU.

Marius the giraffe killed

There were online petitions to save Marius, but to no avail.

Despite popular petitioning, Copenhagen zoo destroyed a healthy two year old giraffe yesterday, because his genes were deemed to be not good enough. The public were invited to watch, as the giraffe was dissected and fed to the lions. Animal rights groups are outraged, and other zoos are saying they are "saddened" that none of the offers to take Marius were accepted.

Professor Christian Walzer of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, explains why such measures may be needed.
