Today's Webtip: Olympic Truth

A former U.S. Olympic athlete explains the realities of life as an "amateur" athlete.

Samanthe Retrosi was a member of the U.S. Olympic Luge team in 2006. She recently published an article in The Nation in which she describes the reality of the U.S. Olympic system, comparing it to the Hunger Games.

Which is interesting, considering how much work has been done to downplay the potential for political commentary based on that series of books. Her article brought up issues of class and workers rights that don't usually get expressed in U.S. media.

That article has since been followed up by an appearance on Democracy Now. In that interview she expands on the information covered in her article. As with the Snowden leaks, it's mostly information that critics of the system have long suspected, but it's one of the first times an insider has come out and clearly articulated.
