Afghanistan
A draft agreement has been reached laying out the terms under which American troops may stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014. The Loya Jirga, a gathering of some two thousand Afghan elders, is meeting to discuss the text of the agreement. Chris Snow, the UK representative of the Peace Training and Research Organisation explains the importance of the security deal and the Loya Jirga:

Arctic 30
A court in Russia has freed on bail some of the Greenpeace activists who were arrested for protesting against oil drilling in the Arctic. Our Moscow correspondent Charles Maynes tells us more:

Paris Shooter
French police have arrested a man in connection with two shootings and a car jacking in Paris on Monday. He was arrested in a car in an underground car park following a tip-off from a member of the public. As Hugh Schofield in Paris explains, he's a known figure in French criminal history:

Northern Ireland
In a BBC documenary former British soldiers from an undercover unit in Northern Ireland say they were sent to hunt IRA members and killed unarmed civilians during the so-called troubles. Malachi O'Doherty, who was a young journalist at the time, told us he's not surprised:

Fracking in Botswana
Fracking, extracting gas stored between the earth's rocks, has been rejected by Austria but has become a boom industry in America. With very little public fanfare, the southern African country of Botswana is using science developed in the USA to drill for gas in its deserts. Jeff Barbee has made a documentary about the project called The High Cost of Cheap Gas. Chris Cummins reports:
