Today's Webtip: A Girl Called Jack
I came back from my last trip to the States pretty pissed off. Between the cult of the military, institutionalised bullying and culturally embeded violence it was pretty hard to feel hopeful for my home. Watching suburban Rambos wearing side-arms while shopping at big-box stores just brought me to the boiling point.
But trying to buy a bag full of healthy groceries put me over the edge. Fresh produce prices were insane. I was lucky to be able to afford my planned meals, but I couldn't help suffering from a flashback to my years spent living off of a couple dollars a day. It was hard to imagine trying to feed a family with the options available to a low-income earner in one of those suburban deserts.
Fortunately things have changed since my days of 4 pound blocks of government cheese, and it's a lot easier to learn from the experience of others. I could probably do a lot better now than I did back then thanks to cost-conscious cooks like Jack.
You can get the bean burger recipe, as well as the rest of her collection at agirlcalledjack.com . It's not just a collection of tasty treats. Jack writes well and has some fabulous posts that anyone with a taste for politics might want to check out.
