Pope Francis has made headlines around the world for his apparently revolutionary stance on gays and women in the church.

Pope Francis spoke at an in-flight press conference on his way back from Brazil. He said 'If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?'

Although there is no shift in the Church's teaching, there is a groundbreaking shift in the attitude and language, and the new Pontiff seems to be using his very first trip abroad to set the tone for his papacy.

Out goes the dusty, outdated and dogma, in comes an attitude of compassion and inclusiveness, expressed in down to earth terms. For a start, he's the first Pope ever to say "gay" in public! It's wowing the crowds, but it's unlikely to go down well with the conservative wing of the church.

Vatican correspondent, David Willey, explains the fine line Pope Francis is walking to bring the Catholic Church into the 21st century and get back in touch with the people, without overturning the essence of the catholic doctrine.
