Today's Webtip: Hybrids

A geneticist wants us to rethink our origins.

There is an internet fight taking place that might just be of historical importance. I realize that a lot of keyboard jockeys would like to think that their words are destined to something more special than disappearing down the digital rabbit hole, but in the case of Dr. Eugene McCarthy, he might actually be right.

Dr. McCarthy is a geneticist who has long suspected that something is missing from our understanding of evolution. After spending decades studying hybrids like Ligers, Geeps and many varieties of birds, he came to a conclusion that has a few people just a little upset.

He suspects humans might have come to be through the union of pygmy chimps and pigs.

Phys.org has a summary of his hypothesis, you can read the full work at his site and you can enjoy the followup discussion at a second phys.org article.

Be sure to read the comments. That's where the magic happens.
