What started as a minor demonstration over re-development of an Istanbul park on Friday, escalated into nationwide protests over the weekend.

In the face of bitter and violent protests, Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan, has said he is scrapping plans to build a shopping mall on the site of the treasured Gazi Park, and will instead commission a mosque.

Jurassic Park?

Model Mammoth

A model mammoth on display in Ochaby, Poland

Last week, a team of Russian scientists working on a remote island in Siberia discovered the body of a woolly mammoth which, they say, still contained liquid blood.

The remains are estimated to be at least 10,000 years old, and raise new questions about the mammoth and its survival strategies.

For the blood to have remained liquid for such a long time in sub zero temperatures, it must have had some sort of anti-freezing agent. While such agents are found in some insects and fish, they have not so far been found in mammals.

Michael Marshall of New Scientist looks at the importance and implications of the find, and explains why any dreams of a real life Jurassic Park are still firmly in the ranks of science fiction, and should stay that way.
