International coverage of the recent events was pretty thin when things started to escalate. While the major media has started to cover the protests, most people outside of Turkey lack the basic information to put anything in perspective.

MetaFilter had a post yesterday providing links to english coverage and backgrund information. As is so often the case, the comments provided another link to a Reddit thread with even more info. Aside from the summary of events, that thread includes updates and links from redditors on the ground in Turkey. It's a massive thread but well worth wading through.
