The Boston bombing is an example of a three point blueprint for "grassroots" terrorists that has been promoted by al Qaeda. The advice to aspiring jihadists is they should choose a target that they are well aquainted with, one which, when struck will have a major impact, and choose a simple method which doesn't require outside help. In the light of the Boston bombing, and apparently thwarted attacks in Canada and Spain, Scott Stewart of Stratfor looks at how the terrorist threat is changing and how to respond:
