Slowly but surely publicly funded examples of internet idealism are starting to find their way online.
europeana.eu was an excellent addition to the list of examples, and now the U.S. has gotten on board with the Digital Public Library of America:

dp.la
A collection of curated articles and exhibits that draw on the resources of America's librarties, museums and galleries. They don't just offer things up for end-users, they have also provided an API for people who might want to put together apps accessing the full trove of information.
I wonder if we will ever see public broadcasting institutions jumping on this particular bandwagon...
