Zapaday.com provides a calendar based news service that tracks upcoming events based on past news stories. You can follow location based, theme based or even story based news calendars that can help make your editorial planning a heck of a lot easier.

But that's not all! You can even sync the calendars to your personal desktop or mobile calendar.

They have a freemium model going, but it seems as though the basic version has all of the goodies most non-institutional user could actually want.
