Today's Webtip: Unfriending Facebook
Douglas Rushkoff quit Facebook. The author and activist decided he could no longer agree to the conditions use of the social networking behemoth entailed. In other words, he finally figured out that he was the product they were selling.
I'm not going to go into more detail, you can just read his post at CNN.
Anyone who isn't a fan of data mining and don't want to be tracked and packaged might not want to read it though. The site is infested with trackers. Which shouldn't be too surprising, since you have basically been a product of every single media company you have ever dealt with. Seriously, this is nothing new. Despite the endless gnashing of teeth over the issue of paid content, the fact of the matter is that advertising and data sales has been the backbone of most media business models for decades.
That's not saying I agree with it. To be honest, I have no idea what to do. And the good thing about articles like this is that it brings the issue back into the forefront, something that might at least help increase people's awareness of some alternatives. Like the ones mentioned in an article about the article.. I assume I don't need to mention that Forbes is another one of those sites that wants to know who you've been reading.
Not too surprising I guess. Even the tracker blockers are selling user generated content.
