Today's Webtip: For Amusement Only

The life and death of the American arcade.

I spent the new year in a haze of nostalgia. Days enjoying regional delicacies, including Lefse, Tater Tot Hotdish, and Lime Jello salad (I'll spare you the details on the last one, but should probably mention that it includes pineapple, carrots and olives) and New Year's Eve in an Arcade.

I wasn't planning on doing that, but when I saw that there were actually a few still around I decided I had to share the joy with my kids.

Unfortunately, it wasn't anything like the ones I remember. There were still some vague similarities. It was loud, full of kids and there were lots of machines blinking at me. But there weren't many video games. It was more like a casino for kids.

And now I know why.

For Amusement Only: The Life and Death of the American Arcade isn't just for fans of dens of video game iniquity, it's a beautiful example of web journalism done right. A good long read with lots of in-depth information supported by a well produced video that provides an informative summary.

The only bad thing about it is the fact that I can't use their embed code here, so you will just have to go to the site to enjoy the whole thing.
