The Arafat mystery
Subscribe to the Reality Check podcast and get the whole programme after the show.
It reads like a nail briting thriller. The Palestinians are convinced he was poisoned with polonium 210 - the deadly element that shot to fame as the cause of death of the Russian dissisent, Alexander Litvinenko. The Israelis are convinced that he died of HIV AIDS. Other theories are flying around, but no one in the Middle East believes that the 75 year old Yasser Arafat died of natural causes, a view fuelled by the fact that his medical records were never released.
If he was poisoned, who was behind the poisoning and why?
Today, his body was briefly exhumed to allow tests to be taken that will establish whether he was poisoned, and if so, with what substance. It's reported that traces of polonium 210 were found on his possessions that his wife had been keeping - if that is the case, and it was polonium that caused his death, there could be very far reaching consequences.
In Reality Check today, Irris Makler reports on reaction to the exhumation of Yasser Arafat and what prompted the investigation.
