Strikes and protests are being held across Europe today against unemployment and austerity measures. Again. Meanwhile the EU budget talks have ground to a halt. Again.
The stalemate between the EU, governments and the people that has been going around and around for years now isn't showing any signs of breaking. If anything, it's getting worse.
Greece now has 48% youth unemployment, and Spain, Portugal and Italy aren't much better; economies are shrinking, but still austerity is the name of the game.
Gennie Johnson spoke to Johannes Pollak of the Institute for Advanced Studies about the continuing deadlock between governments and the people. He says that although the strikes and protests have become almost part of the "background noise" of everyday life, they still send an important message to governments and to Brussels, and it's a message the leaders will eventually have to heed.
