Patriot missiles for Turkey?
Subscribe to the Reality Check podcast and get the whole programme after the show.
Leaders from Syria's opposition factions are meeting in Doha in an attempt to form some sort of consolitated group to force the resignation of President Assad. However, even if they succeed, it is unclear what would then happen if and when they are successful in removing the current regime. It seems likely that they would simply fragement again, as happened in Iraq and Libya, to name just two.
In the meantime, NATO is in talks with Turkey about
positioning patriot missiles along the border with Syria.
This would seem to be in response to the Syrian mortars that have hit Turkish villages in the border area in recent months - and it could be seen as an escalation.
However, security expert, Paul Rogers, says that this can also be interpreted as a purely defensive move, and could be a clever strategy on behalf of NATO and Turkey.
