Reality Check: Breivik verdict, Lance Armstrong gives up battle against doping charges

Over a year after Anders Behring Breivik went on his notorious killing spree in Norway, the court in Oslo has ruled he was sane at the time of the attacks.

It's a technical discription, and many people feel that anyone who could commit such crimes is insane by definition, but it is nevertheless a verdict that is expected to be well received all round.

Breivik has been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment, but will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in prison as he will be deemed a danger to society, which will be a relief for many people, and Breivik himself wanted to be found sane.

Norwegian journalist, Ketil Stensrud, explains why this verdict is expected to bring closure for everyone involved.

Lance Armstrong quits fight against doping charges

Lance Armstrong, who beat cancer to go on to win 7 Tour de France titles and virtually every honour the world of cycling has to offer, has finally given up his long and bitter struggle against accusations of doping.

While still maintaining that he never doped, Armstrong, who retired from cycling last year, has said "enough is enough" and withdrawn his legal battle against the charges.

This means he will lose his 7 Tour de France titles and numerous other honours, and he has been banned from competitive cycling for the rest of his life.

Paul Dimeo, lecturer in sport studies at Stirling University and Fulbright Scholar studying doping in sport, discusses the role doping still plays in high level sport, and why only a small proprtion of the dopers get caught.
