South Africa is in a 6 day offical mourning period following the killing of 34 miners last week by police. The miners were among thousands striking to demand higher pay, and the police action has sparked protests across the country.
President Zuma says he was shocked by the shooting of the strikers, and called the offical mourning period yesterday - but the mine owners, the Lonmin company, seem unmoved by the tragedy. They say workers must report for work today, or risk losing their jobs - but not surprisingly, after the shooting, many are afraid to return.
Gia Nicolaides is just outside the mine near Pretoria and explained the situation there today.
