People have been talking about the internet of things for ages. I have lost count of how many times I have read press releases about internet enabled refrigerators. Which is a shame, because I really want to have a way to check my inventory while I am out and about. It seems like a good way to cut down on waste while geeking out.

One are that has actually seen practical implementation of smart devices is home automation. People have been playing around with it for ages, commercial products are available, and interesting DIY solutions are all over the place.
