The Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Mursi has become the country's first democratically elected president, but how much power will he have? He is pledging to be a president for all Egyptians, and promising balance in the future cabinet, hoping to quell fears that the country will be run entirely by the Muslim Brotherhood. However, as the military last week dissolved the parliament, it's unclear how much say Mursi will have.

What is clear is that the result is in some sense a step forward and might help a little to allay the fears of those who expected the military to put Shafik in the President's office, but there is still a long way to go to democracy.

Elizabeth Alcock looks at the future of Egypt's political scene with our Cairo correspondent, Karim El Gawhary.
