Today's Webtip: Memrise
Rote memorization sucks. It doesn't have to, but since most of us never learned basic memory skills, it's usually a pretty painful thing.
The problem is that there are some things you just have to memorize. Language learning is pretty tough if you can't remember any vocabulary. It is possible to just absorb a language, but it requires total immersion and access to people who are willing to actually use the language with you. It also needs a basic vocabulary to jump-start the process.
Something which can be made easier with classic flash-cards. One of the few tools still handed down from generation to generation. A tool that has been massively improved by computers.
And gamification.

memrise.com
www.memrise.com has combined both approaches, keeping track of your learning process while giving you points as rewards. They ant you to take seeds of information and grow them into lush plants of knowledge.
Founded by a Grandmaster of Memory and a Neuroscientist, their goal is "to reinvent the way people learn. We want to make learning as easy and fun as it can be, using the best technology and science around. We want to take learning out of the classroom and turn it into play."
The site is heavily geared toward language learning, but people needing a little help in science, mathematics and the arts can also find fact collections that might be of use.
The site if flash free, works fairly well in mobile browsers and they even have an app for those of you who want to take their learning on the road.
