Assange "has exhausted the UK legal system"
Subscribe to the Reality Check podcast and get the whole programme after the show.
Julian Assange has very nearly exhausted the UK legal system. Since he was arrested in England on December 7th 2010, Assange has been from appeal to appeal, trying to overturn the initial decision to extradite him to Sweden, where he faces allegations of sex offences. Now, he has just one more to go, then the only further chance for him is the European Court of Human Rights.
His case hinges on whether Sweden would then hand him over to the United States, where he could, technically, face the death penalty for the thousands of diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks. Sweden insists this is not the intention, and they seem to have Britain convinced. Britain would not extradite anyone in a case where they could face the death penalty.
It looks highly unlikely another appeal court will overturn the extradition, so the chances are we'll see Assange in Strasbourg next. Olly Barratt reports on today's proceedings and probable next steps.
