"Greece has denied reports that it´s planning to withdraw from the Eurozone, following media speculation surrounding a meeting of European finance ministers.
The Greek finance ministry described reports in the German media as untrue, irresponsible and provocative." FM4 News, May 7th, 2011
That was the story in our own news bulletins 12 months ago - though it could almost as well have been today. A year later, not much has changed, except that nobody is calling the reports "untrue, irresponsible and provocative". In fact, now it's more of an "when" than an "if".
After a long year of "last chances", "final attempts" and "deadlines", Greece is now looking into the abyss of leaving the Euro, and the Greek people seem pretty happy about it.
Since last week, all attempts to form a coalition have failed, and the left wing Syrizia party says it will not back any coalition that supports austerity, effectively meaning no coalition is possible. Constitutionally, new elections are the next step, and they are very likely to bring even more support for the anti-bailout parties, so there is now a very real possiblility of Greece leaving the Euro.
Our Brussels correspondent, Sandra Gathman, says what while there is still some token support for Greece, the chances of them being able to stay in the Euro are looking slimmer and slimmer.
