China and the US seem to be desperately seeking a politically acceptable diplomatic solution for Chen Guangcheng- the blind Chinese dissident who fled house arrest last month and sought refuge in the US embassy. Jörg Winter reports from Beijing on the latest develpments.

Japan's first non-nuclear day

Following the Fukushima disaster, the last of Japans nuclear power stations closes today, making the country nuclear free for the first time in 40 years. The government is still undecided over whether the nuclear programme will be restarted, and the issue is still highly controversial in Japan. Chrisoph Weiss has just returned from Tokyo and reports on the Safecast project which is helping ordinary people get accurate information about radiation risks in their area.
