Grasser
The parliamentary committee investigating a series of corruption allegations today took up the BUWOG case for the first time. This focusses on the privatization of Austria’s state housing corporation, which was carried out in 2003-2004 under then finance minister Karl Heinz Grasser. Investigations have revealed that the successful bidder for BUWOG - Immofinanz - paid two acquaintances of Grasser, the lobbyist Peter Hochegger and former FPÖ politician Walter Meischberger 9.6 million Euros commission, money which went via Cyprus to three accounts in Leichtenstein. The allegation is that part of this was a kickback for Grasser. He has repeatedly denied this and any involvement in whatever may have taken place. Joanna King spoke to the managing editor of Der Standard Eric Frey and asked him - how much is Grasser likely to say today- since with investigations still going on he can plead a right not to incriminate himself?
