Civilian shootings bring a new low to US-Afghanistan relations

The shooting of 16 Afghan civilians, including several children, is yet another nail in the coffin of already very strained US-Afghan relations.

Hard on the heels of the notorious YouTube video of US soldiers apparently urinating on the corpses of Afghan fighters, and the furore over the Koran burning incident at Bagram Air Base, a soldier going on a deadly rampage highlights the widely held view in Afghanistan that the US presence is an occupation, not a liberation.

Further official apologies from the US are unlikely to cut much ice with President Karzai or the Afghan people, and the incident with further fuel anti-American feeling.

Security analyst, Paul Rogers, looks at deteriorating US-Afghanistan relations in the light of yesterdays shooting of 16 civilians by a US soldier.
