Today's Webtip: Foodblogs

culinary content for your recommended daily allowance of awesome

Anyone remember when the classic Twitter (or any social netowrking site) cliche were short updates on what someone was eating? I could never decide which was more annoying, that the cliche was used to poke fun of a service I really enjoyed, that people actually did it, or that new users tended to use that for their model of ideal updates.

Fortunately that time has passed. Now the only time I tend to be confronted by someones eating habits is when I seek out a foodblog. A much better format for talking about something as wonderful as food.

One form of foodblogging that was wuite the rage a couple of years ago was bento blogging. Taking pictures of creatively designed bento box lunches that people had made for their kids (or themselves).

Painfully cute pictures of japanese kids lunches were all over the place, and helped bring the idea to the rest of the world. Now you can find painfully cute boxes filled with white bread and hot dogs as well as riceballs and fish.

Fortunately, one of the other side effects was a promotion of healthy packed lunches for kids and grownups alike. justbento.com is one of the sites focusing more on healthy eating than the cute, and it's a great resource for anyone who needs a creative kick to get themselves through the potentially boring process of daily nutrition.

Those of you looking to take it to the next level might want to check out the Veganlunchbox. It's a little bit more than just a photoblog, and a great place to find links to the recipes featured in the photos. Those links will take you to a plethora of vegan cooking sites. A very good thing indeed.

And finally, another site that has dabbled in Bento put goes other places as well, is foodfreak.de The site has some fantastic looking recipes, is in German as well as some English, and has made me so hungry I have to go make lunch.
