Today's Webtip: Pulgasari
Before Kim Jong Il began his job as Korean dictator, he was the son of a Korean dictator. Like many privileged young people, he took advantage of his father's connections to dabble in his hobbies.
In the case of Kim Jong Il, that hobby was film making, and those connections helped him "acquire" the director he really, really wanted to work with. If you can't baffle them with bullshit, kidnap them. Which appears to be just how Shin Sang-ok came to be reunited with his ex-wife while creating movies in North Korea.
Three films were made, and one of them is online. Pulgasari, a classic rubber moster suit flick which I haven't been able to get through yet.
Mental Floss has the whole thing, including some background info and snarky comments.
Shin Sang-ok and his wife eventually found their way out of captivity, and that story apparently includes a taxi chase through Vienna, where the two found their way to the U.S. Embassy and political asylum.
A bad movie packed in a real life story that could make a bad movie.
