Why Canada pulled out of Kyoto
Subscribe to the Reality Check podcast and get the whole programme after the show.
Canada becomes the first country to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol. It says it "does not represent a way forward for Canada" - and pulling out will also save the country some 10 billion Euros worth of fines for not reaching its targets.
Jurrin Westerhof of Greenpeace Austria says that the oil industry in Canada is to blame. He says that while oil was a small part of the Canadian economy when the first emmissions deals were made, it is now a major force, and wields a lot of political power.
He also says that much of the current problem is because countries tried to take on too much too quickly. He says if everyone had agreed to and stuck to small reductions in emmissions, of say 1% per year, 20 years ago, the whole matter would not be an issue today.
Jurrin gave Riem Higazi his reactions to Canada's actions.
