One of the mor exciting developments the last couple of years has to have been the Arduino.

A lovley little bit of hardware that makes building interesting electronic thingies a little bit more accesible. And entire indsutry has been built up around the boards, and all sorts of workshops have taken place to bring microcontrollers to people who might never have thought of them before. Toy hacking, robotics, and interactive art are just a few of the uses these things have been used for.
Many of the projects in the makerverse are based on them, and their are probably millions of guides available on the net right now. One of the coolest has to be the Arduino.
