The inevitable appears to have finally happened, and Silvio Berlusconi has pledged to resign as Prime Minister of Italy. What is unclear is when he might actually go. Althouth he says he will go as soon as the planned package of austerity measure is passed, it's not at all sure when that will be. Our Rome correspondent, David Willey, says the demands the EU are making of the Italian government are steep, and it could take a long time for them to be met. Although we maybe nearing the end of Silvio Berlusconi's reign on Italy's political stage, it's not yet the final curtain.

Protests and arrests in Vienna

London student demonstrations

Up to 10.000 students are expected to take to the streets today in protests against rises in student fees and drastic cutbacks.
