Radio, what's new?

banat9bass
Amany Al-Tunisi, a 25-year old Egyptian woman, made her dream come true in July 2008 when her radio station went on air. “Banat wi Bass” (Girls Only) is the first Radio Station of its kind in the Arab World – it is run exclusively by young women and focuses on women’s issues.
We're talking about more than 5 million listeners from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria! Listeners range from 9 to 55 years old.

"Banat wi Bass" has got some big fans outside of the Arab world. Filia is a Hamburg-based foundation that supports women's projects across the world. It's an organisation that is at once a women-for-women think-tank, fundraiser, and human rights advocate.
I spoke with Sonja Schelper, the director of 'Filia: Die Frauenstiftung', and asked her to give me more information about my fellow (ha) Egyptian radio women.
