Today's Webtip: Rockmelt

Another attempt at making the browser more social.

Anyone remember Flock? That was a fairly hyped attempt at turning firefox into a dedicated social networking client. They jumped on the SN hype and actually managed to grab a bit of cash before fading into the background.

For those of you who don't like adding extensions or plugins yet still want some social interaction during your browsing experience, there is now a replacement. Sort of.

Rockmelt is the latest attempt, and, like the final version of Flock, it builds up off of a Chrome base. It doesn't promise anywhere near as much as Flock does, but that might actually be a very good thing. Especially for Facebook fans who can't stand the new chat. Rockmelt puts a list of your Facebook friends on the side of your browser window, and you can set it to only show friends who are online. This brings back something that never should have been lost, and makes it more useful by letting you chat and browse outside of Facebook at the same time.

The other side of the window holds apps. Right now it seems to be limited to an RSS feed or your Facebook wall. It's a pretty nifty implementation, and it might become even better if they add some more services to the mix.
