Algerian authorities have stated they've received the Gaddafi family members on grounds pertaining to their human rights.

When I read that headline this morning, I was what in England is known as ‘gobsmacked’. My first question was: how does the protection of the human rights of alleged war criminals mesh with the protection of the human rights, with regards to justice, of an entire people? I actually know the answer to that. They don’t mesh.

The reasons Algeria gives for offering refuge to the precise members of the Gaddafi family who have been accused of torture, could be basically anything. ‘Human rights’ just sounds better than ‘we’re making a lot of money off this deal’. Samma uns ehrlich.

That’s just my opinion.

Please find below a more professional approach to the subject as former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and human rights expert Manfred Nowak explains his take on the above.
