Today's Webtip: Unhosted
Anyone who has managed to actually get a social movement moving has probably been more than aware of the fact that the internet isn't really under our control. That nasty internet kill switch might not officially exist, but for all practical services, it can still happen.
The events during the Arab Spring was more than a wake up call to activists in Arab countries, people interested in freedom and social issues across the planet were made even more aware of just how fragile this new found communication can be.
While some people were doing their best to help cut off countries get in through international dial-up, others were busy thinking about ways to avoid the situation in the first place.
The crackdown frequently starts on the web, silencing domains and web pages that spread information someone else doesn't like.
www.unhosted.org is an attempt at decentralising data across the web. A way to host content that isn't locked onto one particular server, or service, giving the user a little bit more control over their data. But an
interview with the founder of the project can explain things much better than I can.
