Today's Webtip: Hobbit Blog
I really want to like video blogging. Really. I've been trying for years.
The trouble is the nature of moving images as an information medium.
After decades of hypertext, I've lost my patience for linear media. Text let's me scan content quickly, and makes it possible to jump through loads of info in a short period of time while quickly filtering out the stuff I don't need.
Audio is a bit more difficult, but I can process it while doing other things and in situations where my other senses are better used keeping me safe. Audio podcasts make my drive time worthwhile and make my time spent exercising interesting.
But video…
A lot of things made for video could just as well have been written or released audio only. The image adds nothing to the information content and the nature of editing video means that a lot of useless words, non-words and hot air are left in.
But when it comes to giving me a look into places and situations I would normally never see, video is king. A well edited and conceptually sound mini-film can slam a mass of information into my head in a very short period of time.
Now take that idea, and have it put together by pro film makers, and you have a few minutes of useful video consumption.
Like the Video Blog that Peter Jackson is doing during shooting for The Hobbit. It works well as an information, entertainment and marketing medium. This is the way it should be done kiddies…
