Today's Webtip: History in the Kitchen

Cookbook? History lesson? A little bit of both?

In Minnesota, everyone knows that the standard Renaissance era menu consisted primarily of roast turkey legs and cheap Meade. We knew this through our personal experience at the regional Renaissance Festival, a rather quaint version of the Burgfesten you can find around Austria.

Despite growing up amidst hordes of ex-Vikings, and being all to familiar with the horrors of Lutefisk, I never really thought about what those horned sailors of yore might have actually ate. It's just not one of those things we thought about.

But now I know. Thanks to a website dedicated to examining and sharing historical delicacies. It might not be your history, but it IS the history of the British Isles, which means that there is a pretty wide variety of influence to be found. From Roman Lentil Casserole to Shri-Khand, you can find out not only how to make the dishes, but fill yourself up on the history of them as well.

Food for the mind and body...
