I don't know how often I have said to myself "Dave, you need more stools in your life". I do however know how often I have said "Need more bookshelves. Now!"

Sometimes, I have even made my own. Unused ladders and bricks and boards have been a very common design element in my apartments in the past.
For those of you who would rather have something of substance holding you (or your books) off the ground, it might be worth a trip to the furniture design bank. They have a collection of free designs and guides to building things like stools, bookshelves, and end tables. Some are ugly, some are complex, and some actually look useful.
