Anonymous takes it to the next level.

I assume you have heard of Anonymous. A group (or rather, idea) that has manifested at various times through the years, taking the idea of online activism to various conflicts with results that have been described as online bullying, cyber terrorism, and civil disobedience, depending on who was doing the describing.

The very nature of Anonymous means that it can be almost anything, to anyone that can get enough influence to get things moving. It also makes it very easy for people trying to cover the idea of Anonymous to get pranked.

The last year or so has been an interesting one in the development of Anonymous. Actions attributed to the movement have become increasingly political, with actions and propaganda supporting Wikileaks, Tunisia, Egypt, the Wisconsin protests, and more recently, this:

AmpedStatus, a site which has been credited as having inspired the idea behind Operation Empire State Rebllion, has a rather informative post by David DeGraw with his take on the development, and lots of links to background info and further reading.

Interesting times, indeed.
