Today's Webtip: Oligopoly
Monopoly has a pretty long and very interesting history. One that manages to mix up Georgism, Quakers, Colleges, Patent Law and more than a few lawsuits.
But it's getting a bit dated, and the current financial crisis seems like a perfect chance to get the game back up to speed.
After reading an interesting article about the largest U.S. company and it's incredibly small (well, negative actually) tax bill, I couldn't get the word Oligopoly out of my head. And I began to imagine a board game with that title.
And then I caught myself and googled it.
Sure enough, it's been done.

And it sounds like a lot of fun to play. You see, rather than playing the budding young (or old) monopolist, you get to be the hard working sap who pays up. Rather than racing to the top by buying all the land, in Oligopoly you have to be the last player to go bankrupt. I'm particularly fond of the class aware rule variation, as it makes the whole going to and getting out of jail thing so much more life-like.
Anyone up for a game?
(And yes, it's posted on a forum for a company providing financial advice.)
