Today's Webtip: DIY Science!
Google has announced a new project that is set to launch today. The Google Science Fair.
For those of you who don't know what a science fair is, imagine a giant room filled with kids, tables, and things that go beep. Or bloop.
Or, in some cases, boom.
Ok, most of the projects don't do any of those things. Most kids put together presentations of research they have been doing at home or together with their school. It's a chance for young scientists and inventors to get together and strutt their stuff.
I was lucky enough to take part in an inventors fair as a kid, and in between the inventions that were just ideas on paper and the ones that didn't work, I found some really interesting things and the people who made them. One of them, a kid who made an electronic 20 sided die, ended up becoming a friend and collaborator on some really fun projects. It was also the first time that my parents had a chance to see that I might not be the only kid making things blow up in the basement.
Since Google is global, you probably won't have a chance to get together with the participants in person, but they will be hosting the projects on their site, and have put together resources for social networking to keep you up on what's going on. They aren't in this alone though. Google is working together with CERN, LEGO, National Geographic and Scientific American.
Anyone between 13-18 can sign up, and there are some extremely cool prizes to be had.
you can find out more on the projects homepage, and check out the opening stream this afternoon at 15:00 on the science fair YouTube channel.
