Today's Webtip: Ad block?
Sometimes I forget how annoying surfing can be. Once this summer I made the mistake of running a session without any adblocking while tethered to my phone.
I was amazed at just how much bandwidth that ate up. With a mobile plan that includes 100 euro GB's, it was a pretty expensive lesson.
I have since tightened the screws on all of my systems. I have uninstalled flash, regained control over scripts, and blocked ads across the board. Especially on my phones.
The end result has been better battery life, lower bills, faster page rendering and a sudden end to mysterious page hangs.
I've also missed out on some jaw dropingly horrible advertising.
So I was a bit surprised when my colleague pointed out one amazingly stupid ad this morning. I had forgotten that I had managed to block ads on my work machine, and try as I might, I couldn't see what he was talking about.
I finally went over to his screen and checked it out. I then showed him how to free himself from such monstrosities.
So I thought, maybe it was time to remind people that they don't need to be victims of questionable commercial legislation and even more questionable strategic deals.
Lifehacker has a special tag (#adblock) to help you find relevant tips:
A search for adblock at the relevant app store will turn up more than a few adfree browsers for iOS and Android.
The Cult of Mac has a review of Atomic Web Browser, one of the ad free solutions for iOS that also offers some other interesting advantages to Safari.

Dolphin Browser has been my browser of choice for Android since sometime this summer:

Users of jailbroken and rooted phones have a few more options, but I will let you figure those out on your own...
